Hippo Water Roller
A solution for collection and transportation of water
http://www.hipporoller.org/why.php

What i really like about this solution is the realism that they have used to come up with this solution.

Instead of building billion dollar plans truth about enzyte for laying pipelines and pumps, this approach is fundamentally what we (at the company i am interning at this fall) call as the incremental approach to problem solving.

In situations where an existing solution is being used by a ton of people and we realize that the solution is not the best, the incremental approach suggests making the largest possible change without having to ask the users to mend their ways except for just the one aspect which involves the switching from existing solution to the new solution.

In the specific case of the hippo water roller, the users can still go about their lives as usual except making the one aspect of life that this project deals with i.e. collecting and transporting water in a easier/safer way. Benefits by the use of new solution are good, but the new solution doesnt require the people to come up solutions to other new problems (except may be having to think about what to do with the saved time and energy).

The incremental approach to technology based solutions for real world problems solves problems without creating new ones. And thats why i like this project.

The What If

Its the quintessential question. It is the question that seeds every change. While, some may argue that there are other questions as important as an What If. Like an How To question. But its not long before we realize that a how to question does not take a shape without someone asking a What If question.

Been thinking about it for a while. Its one of those very few things in human psyche that few people you think about every so often and it makes them thinkmore about it. So here to getting more people thinking about.

Think about it:
What If ... no one asked an "What If" question ... ever
Thats a big one among the different kinds of What If questions.

Before i get ahead of my own train of thoughts, here are some kinds.

There are the trivial ones like
What if i didn't have my breakfast today?
What if i stopped watching tv!

On the extreme we have the basic questions of life
What if we didn't die
What if "God was one of us"

And the ones in between, defines us. I believe, that all it takes is one great What If question to hit it big. For example:

The Simpsons guys asked:
What If people were Yellow?

The Superman people asked:
What If there was a man was so perfect that all of humanity can lookup and idealize him?

Gandhi asked:
What If we build a movement around the doctrine of non-violence?

One thing to note about the best What If questions is that they are specific. But that does not mean that all What If questions are going to get you there.

So, keep thinking and may be you ll come up with the next big What If question. All the others, share here! One great What If question can unite the world.

Like a bird without a song

Has anybody heard the song "Bleeding Love" by Leona Lewis and wondered what does it sound like? Well listen to this 90s ballad - "Nothing Compares to You" by Sinead O Connor if you are still scratching you head over it.

And thats just the half of it. On googling, i find that a bunch of other people agree and there is a remix out there which attempts to combine them. The YouTube video of the Nothing Bleeding Love Remix does not have audio!

So i got a download for you. I think this is the remix behind the video. As with many remixes, it doesnt compare to either of the songs. But it isnt half bad either!

Now the real thing is a song (no video) that features Sinead O Connor alongside Leona Lewis. This is really worth a listen. If anybody has a download for this song, do let me know.

Meanwhile, The big movies of the summer "Indiana Jones & The Kingdom of Crystal Skull" and "Sex and the City - The movie" are out and need to be watched and hopefully find an end to the journey of these two icons. Yes, i dont mind stating publicly that SATC was an icon of our time. Despite all the bimbo blabber that goes on in that series, it makes a lot of sense on a lot of occasions. And someday "Lost" will become such an icon.

The Lost season ended and they have reconfirmed my belief that you just need to watch Episode 1 and Episode Last of each season and thats pretty much all the good stuff. Rest is just soap! Although i must admit that the episode where Desmond "mentally" travels back in time was quite interesting.

Finally, Dido's next album is due in September! Keep watching.

Singing up some Vegetarian dishes

Looks like this is becoming a series in the great work my friends from the Ryze Network in Hyderabad are doing.

Raaga has compiled a blog (http://chefatwork.blogspot.com/) with around 250 posts about her experiments with vegetarian dishes. As Aru calls them, these are traditional and fusion foods. By the looks of them, they look great, unlike the unbalanced concoctions i have posted about in the past.

I hope i get to sample some of them when i visit India next time now that they have moved closer to my hometown. Anyone looking for excellent recipes of Indian vegetarian food should get in touch with Raaga through her blog (http://chefatwork.blogspot.com/).

Traffic in Hyderabad - A Citizen Initiative

My friend from Ryzerabad Sameer Mehta and his colleagues have been lately doing some commendable work at creating awareness about traffic rules and regulations in Hyderabad. It is a citizen effort to improve the traffic situation in Hyderabad which has dramatically deteriorated over the last 3-4 years.

Sameer has taken a grass root approach to solving the problem and has taken to the roads on occasions. At the same time they have been communicating with the city authorities for support as well as exchange of ideas. I believe its the right approach for an initiative from the citizens.

Sameer runs a blog which carries updates about their work and news-bits about developments on the issue of Traffic in Hyderabad. Please visit the blog and if you are in Hyderabad, contact Sameer and participate in their efforts in a coordinated manner.

Coupled with support from mass communication media, this approach is quite likely to find success. If you are in the media in Hyderabad, India or elsewhere, please contact Sameer to commend and promote his initiative.

I must mention that this is a good example of a sensible citizen initiative that is not motivated by Rang-De-Basanti! Its not a spur of the moment erratic act and it is an effort which is sustainable.

Fly Lonely Angel

Something is seriously wrong with the aviation regulations.

Click on the image to see the pricing blunder. Everyone knows it ofcourse. Did you think about it.

Meanwhile, everyone should watch this rock-n-roll movie "Almost Famous".

On this valentine's day, i think back about all the beautiful people i have met and all the high times we've had and all the music we made and all the things we have talked about. And despite all the blur that it is, i cherish it and i wish all my people a happy valentine's day.
